Pritzker and lawmakers are working on statewide rules regarding cellphones in schools, but there are a number of schools in the Chicago area that have already established their own rules banning cellphones in classrooms.

Are cellphones a useful tool or a distraction in the classroom? According to Gov. JB Pritzker, they’re a distraction, and he has proposed banning them during classroom instruction. Pritzker proposed legislation during his State of the State speech in February that would call for banning cellphones during classroom learning time.

On Tuesday, the N.C. House K-12 Education Committee backed a bill that requires school districts and charter schools to adopt a policy that eliminates or severely restricts student access to cellphones during instructional time. The Senate Education Committee is scheduled to take up its own phone ban bill on Wednesday.

One bill still up for consideration, a statewide ban on cellphones in classrooms. The Georgia House approved a bill that would prohibit students from kindergarten through the 8th grade from using all personal electronic devices during school hours.
