Hurricane Erin was battering the northeast with strong winds and heavy surf on Friday morning as forecasters monitored three other systems in the Atlantic for possible tropical formation.

As Hurricane Erin moves out to sea, forecasters on Aug. 22 are keeping watch on two other areas of disturbed weather in the Atlantic Ocean.

Strong winds and waves from Hurricane Erin have battered Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard as dangerous rip currents continue to threaten from the Carolinas to New England.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services said Atlantic beaches in Suffolk County would remain closed to swimmers through Saturday morning due to hazardous rip currents from the storm that are expected to remain over the weekend. Earlier in the day, the department had said the closures would last until Saturday night.

Central Pennsylvania residents can expect a gradual weather shift over the next 24 hours, with Hurricane Erin’s remnants driving cloudy conditions today and a potential for severe thunderstorms developing Sunday.
