Following news of the league's expansion plans, Cunningham threw shade at Cleveland and Detroit in particular, calling them cities that fans may not be that excited about when it comes to growing women's basketball. Cunningham instead named Miami, Nashville and Kansas City as her preferred pick of cities with "amazing opportunity."

Aside from all of the attention Sophie Cunningham has received for her comments on the WNBA's expansion, she's been quite the addition for the Indiana Fever. During her first season with the Fever, Cunningham has posted 5.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game.

With Detroit, Cleveland and Philadelphia all slated to get WNBA teams by 2030, the league opted to add two teams in the Midwest to go along with Indiana, Minnesota, and Chicago. However, Fever forward Sophie Cunningham was skeptical that the WNBA made the right expansion choices.
