LONDON, Nov 13 - The Church of England faced pressure on Wednesday to ensure people are held to account for systematically covering up allegations of abuse, one day after the Archbishop of Canterbury resigned over a church abuse scandal.

John Smyth, a barrister who ran Christian summer camps in the 1970s and 1980s, committed physical, psychological and sexual abuse against more than 100 boys and young men.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has opted to quit as head of the Church of England after a critical report over his handling of an abuse scandal, it was announced.

Justin Welby, the most senior bishop within the Church of England and other church officers, announced his resignation after a review found he "could and should" have reported John Smyth's abuse of boys and young men to police in 2013.
