Residents in a few of the U.S.’ northernmost states will have a chance to spot the northern lights Thursday night, according to a forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. NOAA forecasts a Kp index of three for Thursday night,

Alaska and the northern Midwest states have the best chance of getting a glimpse of the dazzling sights, but the northern most reaches of New England may see it too, according to the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. Based on maps they released, Maine has the best chance of seeing it tonight.

The latest Northern Lights forecast means that aurora may be seen in the continental U.S. over Christmas after experts in space weather predicted a geomagnetic storm.

The northern lights may be visible in northern Wisconsin Monday night, according to a forecast from the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center. Monday's forecast has a Kp index of three, meaning there may be more light activity. “If you are in the right place, these aurora can be quite pleasing to look at,” the NOAA says.

Major U.S. metropolitan areas including those of Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Seattle are north of the projected viewline, while other cities including Buffalo and Detroit are just south of the predicted cutoff for seeing the lights. The northern lights may be visible in almost all of Canada, including Calgary, Montreal and Toronto.

On Christmas Day, a geomagnetic storm will enhance the chances of witnessing the Northern Lights across 10 U.S. states.
