President Donald Trump signed an executive order Wednesday at the White House that bars transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports, just months after the San Jose State women’s volleyball team found itself in the middle of a national firestorm on the issue.

The Education Department says it is investigating potential civil rights violations at two universities and a high school sports league that allowed transgender athletes to compete on women's teams.

The press release from the Department of Education on Thursday announcing an investigation into San Jose State for allowing a transgender player on its women’s volleyball team promoted a false narrative about the velocity of that player’s spikes and the injury risk her participation meant for other players.

SJSU, the University of Pennsylvania and the Massachusetts high school athletic association are cited as violators of the Trump Administration’s Feb. 5 executive order banning transgender athletes.

San José State University President Cynthia Teniente-Matson told Fox News Digital the school will cooperate with a federal investigation into potential Title IX violations.
