Progresso is celebrating National Soup Month by reimagining a classic comfort food — as a hard candy called Soup Drops.

If you didn’t know, January is National Soup Month, and a company that often comes to mind when you think of canned soup decided to offer people a different way to experience chicken noodle: in the form of drops.

Each order of 20 drops comes in a container resembling Progresso’s actual soup cans and is accompanied by a can of actual Progresso Traditional Chicken Noodle Soup. The cost of both is $2.49, plus 99 cents shipping.

"For decades, Progresso Soup has brought you cozy comfort on chilly days or when you're under the weather," said MC Comings, VP, Business Unit Director for Progresso at General Mills. "When you're sick, nothing is truly more reassuring than Chicken Noodle Soup. So, we thought, why stop at the soup bowl?"

General Mills on Thursday unveiled Progresso Soup Drops, a limited-edition savory cough drop that tastes like Progresso's chicken soup. It immediately sold out — but the company's making more.

The brand says the savory drops are available for a limited time in January for National Soup Month and the peak of cold and flu season. The Soup Drops went on sale Thursday and can only be found online. They were sold out by 1 p.m. General Mills says additional quantities will be released every Thursday.

I had to check the date when reading this press release from General Mills to ensure that it wasn't April 1st. It is not April Fools Day, and Progresso Soup Drops are an actual product. The chicken soup-flavored hard candy drops come in an ersatz soup can with the tagline "Soup You Can Suck On.
