Buttigieg wrote that he "seriously" considered running for office in 2026 but that the Democratic Party has a "deep and talented bench in Michigan."

The Indiana native established a permanent residence in his husband's Michigan hometown in 2022, and was seen as a favored candidate to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Gary Peters

Buttigieg currently lives in Michigan and many people thought he would run for the open Senate seat being vacated by Gary Peters in 2026. There was also some speculation that he might run for governor of Michigan to replace Gretchen Whitmer.
