Conservation groups say the proposed Arizona routes for an Interstate 11 project failed to consider habitat for imperiled desert species.

In response to a lawsuit from conservation groups, the Federal Highway Administration and Arizona Department of Transportation have agreed to halt planning activities and reevaluate their approval of Interstate 11.

Planning for a new interstate through southern Arizona has been put on hold. 280 miles of highway between Nogales and Wickenburg expanding Interstate 11 had been proposed by federal and state transportation agencies,

The Nevada Department of Transportation says they need about $2 billion a year in order to complete needed projects. However, the current annual budget is around $1 billion.

NDOT officials say the project is now 90% complete. This news came out of the Nevada Department of Transportation's finance presentation to the state finance subcommittee earlier this week.
