Battalion Sgt. Major James Mardin is still telling war stories more than 80 years after he arrived in Normandy, six days after D-Day.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) – It was very special birthday for one Maine man! James Mardin just turned 103 years old on Thursday! The World War II veteran spends a lot of time at the Maine Military Museum in South Portland where he is known with affection as the museum's living artifact.

The restaurant chain confirmed in a statement that the South Portland location struggled to overcome post-pandemic difficulties, among other challenges.

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine — Cracker Barrel, known for its comforting Southern-style food and rustic atmosphere, has permanently closed its South Portland restaurant, the only location in Maine. The decision comes after the company struggled to recover from the pandemic’s impact, leaving approximately 60 employees without jobs.

Cracker Barrel, specializing in folksy, Southern-style comfort food, has been in South Portland and 357 Maine Mall Road for close to 15 years. The Tennessee-based company has more than 650 restaurants around the country, though its South Portland location was the only one in Maine.

Nominees include Taj in South Portland and The Abbey in Brunswick, while 3 southern Maine chefs are nominated in the Best Chef: Northeast category.

Sunday will finally bring above freezing temps back to Maine. Highs will be in the low to mid 30s, and as a clipper system moves in a few snow showers will be possible in the afternoon, mainly in the mountains. Monday will be a touch cooler than Sunday, but many will still get above freezing with more clouds than sun.

The only Cracker Barrel restaurant in Maine has closed its doors for good. An employee told CBS13 they found out about the closure when they showed up to work at the store by the Maine Mall in South Portland.
