The holiday dates back to Nov. 11, 1918, which was the official end of World War I, when an armistice between the Allied nations and Germany started on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Day falls on Nov. 11 every year when the nation’s service members are honored. Veterans Day is a federal holiday, but not everything is closed. Some businesses are open on the holiday while others close.

The bond market will close on Monday in observance of Veterans Day. Wall Street, however, will be open on Monday, with the stock market open for a regular session.
