Fourth of July has always represented one of the busiest stretches travel in the United States, and this year is no different. In total over 72.2 million people are expected to travel for the holiday this week, 1.7 million more than in 2024, according to AAA Northeast.

AAA reports that Wednesday, July 2, is the busiest travel day for drivers followed by Sunday, July 6. Generally, hitting the road early in the morning is the best way to avoid traffic. Tiffany Wright, an AAA spokesperson, said avoiding those peak travel times is key -- including rush hour.
