Another Australian triumph! 🏆 Vegemite, marsupial-inspired breakdancing and the Hemsworths come to mind when pondering uniquely Aussie wonders. But, as it turns out, the world also has Australia to thank for its songbirds. 🎵 For a long time, scientists thought Australian songbirds had evolved from their Northern Hemisphere counterparts. But, DNA studies flipped that idea on its head. Not only that, but research has also uncovered that, like hummingbirds, songbirds repurposed a "savoury" taste

A necessary weevil. 🍃 All insects are amazing. But some insects are helping us fight the good fight for agriculture and biosecurity. Like the Cabomba Weed Weevil (Hydrotimetes natans), whose extremely fussy diet is being used to wage war on the invasive weed Cabomba (Cabomba caroliniana) in Queensland's waterways. This National Invasive Species Awareness Week, learn about more of the small and mighty defenders making a big impact protecting our crops and environment from invasive species: https

To bee or not to bee (the answer is always to bee). 🐝 There are un-bee-lievable benefits to supporting Australia’s native bees, like the beautiful Blue-banded Bee (Amegilla chlorocyanea) seen here. They're one of a handful of Blue-banded Bee species native to Australia. If you've been lucky enough to spot one in your garden, you'll know they are distinctive and noisy. Typically they make jerky movements, darting this way and that, often stopping to hover momentarily when their bodies may be see

Choosing your fighter can be tough. ⚔️ Do you prioritise armour, speed, strength, or powerful noses? Turns out, our biocontrol experts ask similar questions when it comes to choosing the best species to help with pest management. Snails are in their red era. 🐌 It’s their favourite colour. On the flipside, they don’t like garlic. 🧄 We’re aiming to use these behaviours to protect crops from invasive pest snail species. One day they could form the basis of strategies farmers could use to attract them (for trapping and removal) and repel them using safe barrier substances. Push-pull strategies like these could be a new mollusc management technique to protect food crops such as grains and legumes. Read the story: https://ww

Putting the CSI in CSIRO. 🔎 Environmental DNA, or eDNA, is DNA left behind in the environment, like fingerprints at a crime scene. Collected from water, soil or even air, scientists can use it to uncover all kinds of secrets. Compared to traditional ecosystem monitoring, it saves time, money and reduces environmental impact. But until now, the thing holding eDNA back was data. Scientists need reference DNA to match what they find with the correct species. That’s why we've launched the National

Going from birthday suit to biohazard suit all in a day’s work! 💼 Our researchers at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness go to extraordinary lengths to start their day, including stripping down to enter secure airlocks (don’t worry, they can still bring their lunch). These protocols enable them to handle some of the world’s most hazardous pathogens safely. Their work is critical to Australia’s frontline defence against emergency animal disease outbreaks, enabling fast detection, rapi

It is Plastic Free July! ♻️ We all know less plastic pollution is the bees-knees, and we are abuzz with projects in this area. 🐝 One of these projects is by our very talented researchers who use artificial intelligence to track rubbish in our waterways. This information will help prevent rubbish from entering our environment in the first place. Meet Dr Denise Hardesty: https://blog.csiro.au/dr-denise-hardesty/ | CSIRO

We dig these wasps. 🐝 Did you know that many wasps lay their eggs in the eggs, pupae or bodies of other insects and spiders? Here's a digger wasp (family Sphecidae) we filmed at Casuarina Sands in Canberra digging a hole for its prey. It will sting and paralyse an insect and then drag it into the hole it has dug. Like something out of Alien, it will then lay an egg on or in the other insect's body, which will develop and eat the host as it grows. Dig into the weird world of parasitoid wasps: ht

Shrimply the best. 🦐 While many of us are enjoying a festive feed of prawns, have you ever thought about what feeds our festive treat? The Australian prawn farming industry has been growing healthy prawns and serving them up around the country since the 1980s. We have a long history of working with these iconic crustaceans in both the domestic and international prawn industries. The CSIRO will slash up to 350 full-time equivalent jobs to address rising costs. It comes on top of more than 800 positions being slashed in the past 18 months. The job losses will come from across the country, with no details about what positions are at risk. National Secretary of the Community Public Sector Union Melissa Donnelly spoke to ABC News's Joe O'Brien.
